Bethel Building Project

Introduction

Jesus said to “see the harvest but pray the Lord of the harvest for laborers”.  Truly the harvest is great, however, what are the laborers for and where is the shortage?  The harvest is not just about harvesting the “wheat” during harvest time but rather a whole process that not only culminates in harvesting but further to bring the “wheat” into the “mill” for processing so that it will be useful for various consumption.

This process is complex and is made up of different departments, people, process flows and equipment all flowing together to produce a product for public consumption.  When this process breaks down, the efficiency and effectiveness deteriorates and they go out of business.

How much more complex is the “harvest of the Lord”?  The harvest for the lost is the Church’s primary objective.  The process is “discipleship”.  Jesus commanded us to make disciples of all nations.

Exactly how the Church is to do this is left to the Church with the guidance and help of the Holy Spirit.

Bethel’s purpose of the “building project” is to build a structure that is efficient and effective in the “harvest of the Lord”.  This structure uses the concepts discussed here to better fulfill the Church’s overall objective of “winning souls for Christ”.

Imagine, the Church as a physical manufacturing plant.  It receives new believers; process/nurture them into Disciples of Christ.  There is attention to detail and processes to effectively and efficiently produce quantity products and still maintain quality.  This attention to detail allows individuals to be productive.

When there is no organization, it becomes ineffective.  How odd would it be to see workers coming in and out to work when they want to, they don’t listen to management.  People are put into positions without training but because they are available, they get to operate the machines.  They wait until management does the work and then watch them.

This scenario doesn’t look right.  The new believer will never be properly nurtured; it may even spoil and die.  It would have been just as good not to have harvested them in the first place.

The laborers that Jesus states that are needed is needed in the “mill”; the Church.  The Church is in great need of skilled laborers.   Yet the work of the ministry has been left to the pastor or to paid staff.  Slowly, the Church has been declining in lay leadership and lacking involved members.

The mill also has equipment and processes that need to be tuned and working properly and it must work together.  There needs to be organizational effectiveness.  The Church needs the gift of “operation”.

Different ministries often compete to recruit that newest member into their ministry so that they can be replaced after being burnt out.

Ministries are like the different parts of the processing plant that needs to cooperate rather than compete.  Everyone must work together to nurture the believer.

Purpose

The purpose of the project is to create a systematic approach for the Church to effectively and efficiently bring souls into the kingdom and properly nurture them to be effective Disciples of Christ.

To improve methodologies and ministries of the church to promote quality growth as the church grows in quantity.

It will establish key areas that are necessary to nurture a believer.

Objectives

There are four areas of emphasis to be developed.  These areas are equally important and dependent on each other.  They must all function properly and interactively with each other to insure proper nurturing of a believer.  They are:

Spiritual Growth

Church Community

Member Care

Evangelism

When a person becomes a new believer, they need to be nurtured properly.

“Train up a child in the way they should go, so when they are older they will not depart from it.  Make disciples of all man; teach him to observe everything that I have commanded you.”

This important area establishes a strong foundation in the believer.  Without a strong foundation, the believer will fall when trials and temptations comes.  Too often churches get new believers or newcomers involved in ministry too soon that their spiritual foundation does not get established.  Getting the ministry positions filled becomes a priority rather than the person’s spiritual growth.

Being involved in ministry should be the result of a well nourished Christian because it is a natural output of a mature Christian.  His works come from His love, commitment and understanding of Christ.

A Christian’s involvement should also be relative to their maturity or growth level.  As a child should not be allowed to drive a car just because he shows responsibility, a new Christian needs to grow up first and be given responsibility in proportion to his maturity level.

A person that shows zeal and commitment but has not yet been tested by the Lord is still not fit for higher levels of responsibility but a properly nurtured Christian will be more fruitful and will stand in the time of storm.

Wanting to belong is human nature.  Belonging to the Body of Christ is of the Spirit.  When we accept Jesus Christ in our heart; we belong to the family of God.  There is strength, growth, support when the Body of Christ is together.  Creating relationships within the Church is commanded by God, “not to forsake the gathering of believers.”

Every time we gather together, formally or informally, we worship God because He is always with us.  We also edify and encourage one another; we laugh and cry.  We are a family.

As a person becomes a Christian, leaving a life with bad and harmful influences will be more difficult if there is nothing to replace it.  Being a new Christian is the most vulnerable stage in a Christian’s growth.  Having a family that can support this initial growth is vital in leaving a worldly life and it’s influences.

Being a community does not allow us to be exclusive but inclusive.  There is no room for prejudices:  cultural bias, personal bias, or economical bias.

Building this community requires the nurturing of trust, dependability, commitment, self-sacrifice, and a loving heart to say the least.  It takes intentional effort to become a true family.

Moving or finding your way around an organization can be confusing.  Knowing the structure of the Church is like “hide and seek”.  Member’s hide and leaders seek them out.

People go to large churches to hide from being involved and people go to small churches to have closer relationships.

A well organized church is always attractive to people.  A place where everyone seems to know their place and are happy in it or where their children will be taken care of.

Member Care does just that.  This area assists newcomers and new believers around the church.  It determines a person’s need and how to get them fulfilled,  to find their gifts, areas of passion and assist them into ministries that are appropriate and effective in meeting their needs.

This area helps to fill ministry vacancies with the appropriate person and to help a person find their place.  A person should not feel stuck or stranded in a ministry they inherited.

When a person is in the right place, they will be content and be effective given the proper support.

Another function of this area is to care for the needs of individual members.  These needs can range from personal needs, financial, emotional, and social needs.  Everyone faces difficulties in their lives and caring for our members is an action towards loving others, especially within the Body of Christ.

This is well known to all churches as it’s mission; to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.   Evangelism is not just physically preaching the Gospel but also to live the Gospel.  “They shall know you by their love.” “Pure religion is to feed the poor and visit the widow and to live a righteous life.”  “You are the light of the world.”

The Gospel must be lived; it must be seen by the world.  Evangelism needs to touch all areas of our life and communities:  neighborhoods, cities, government, civic organizations and other churches.

Evangelism is done by everyone and every church; together.  There are many churches in our communities competing for the same soul.  It must be a concerted effort.  When we work together, the world will believe us.

With all the bad examples and scandals that the Church has done, it’s no wonder the world doesn’t believe us or the Gospel.  Even the world does not want to be part of a Church that does not practice what they preach despite the Truth of God’s Word.

Evangelism needs to start from the inside with a genuine love for others.  The world can feel and see if it’s fake or not.
